Language Education
Turkish Language and Literature
The Koç School Turkish Language and Literature Department operates with an innovative, holistic, and student-centered educational philosophy, aligned with the learning outcomes of the Ministry of National Education’s Maarif Model and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs implemented starting in grade 11. The primary objective of this course is to help students understand language not merely as a means of communication, but in all its power and subtlety; thereby developing the fundamental skills necessary to ensure that core language competencies—such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening—are utilized to the fullest throughout their lives.
The department aims to cultivate students’ human, cultural, and intellectual sensitivity through distinguished works of Turkish and world literature. With this vision, a curriculum focused on developing higher-order thinking skills such as analytical and critical thinking, comparison, evaluation, and problem-solving is implemented.
In order to reveal and encourage students’ creativity and potential in literature, a prestigious short story competition named after The Koç School founder Mrs. Suna Kıraç is organized annually in two categories (The Koç School students and students across Istanbul). The submitted works are evaluated by a selection committee composed of respected Turkish authors and are published as a book each year.
Additionally, to support students’ development beyond the classroom, the department offers enriching activities such as Boyut Literary Magazine, Debate Club, Literature Activities Club, and culture- and arts-focused field trips, enabling students to explore the deep and multidimensional relationship between literature and daily life.
English
The Koç School High School English Department consists of 21 certified teachers with diverse global educational experiences. Many of these teachers hold a master’s degree in education or English Language and Literature, and some are pursuing a doctorate. Some teachers are also IB English A: Language and Literature and/or TOK exam supervisors.
The Koç School High School English Department follows a standards-based curriculum designed to engage students and develop the skills necessary for academic success. The department offers a vertically and horizontally integrated program focused on reading, writing, listening, speaking, literary analysis, and academic writing. The curriculum equips students with the tools necessary for success at national and international universities, promotes fluency in all language skills, and develops academic potential. Through clear standards, assessment, and feedback, students gain equal access to the curriculum and opportunities for independent study, becoming confident, fluent English users equipped to handle future personal, professional, and academic challenges.
In addition to developing its curriculum according to English standards, Koç School also includes courses that meet students' social-emotional needs while promoting skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, and digital literacy. The curriculum emphasizes the five Koç School dispositions—Adaptation, Innovation, Discernment, Empathy, and Integration—that support students in cultivating a culture of flourishing amidst the complexity of an interdependent world.
Koç School selects various texts to promote open-mindedness, cultural competence, and global citizenship, balancing appreciation for the past with commitment to the present. The curriculum is regularly evaluated to ensure the best educational experience. The school believes that all students can thrive with personalized support and aims to foster responsibility and self-awareness in students through both lessons and individual interactions.
