At The Koç School, the Biology program aims to develop students’ scientific thinking skills, foster a sense of responsibility towards nature, and cultivate a global perspective on sustainability. Rooted in the interdisciplinary approach of the Maarif Model, the program encourages both academic success and a value-based understanding of science.
Grades 9 and 10:
Biology is a compulsory subject taught in alignment with the Turkish Ministry of Education (MEB) curriculum. The language of instruction and assessment is English, and students are taught by both Turkish and international teachers. Through this bilingual exposure, students gain access to scientific terminology in two languages and develop their critical thinking, research, and observation skills, while also enhancing their awareness of life and the natural world.
Grades 11 and 12:
Biology becomes an elective course, taught in Turkish, and is particularly chosen by students planning to pursue science-focused degrees at universities in Türkiye. Delivered by Turkish teachers, these courses provide strong preparation for national university entrance exams and support students on their academic and scientific career paths.
IB Programme:
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology Programme is offered in Grades 11 and 12 at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). It is taught by Turkish and international teachers who have attended IB-certified workshops. Courses are organized into differentiated groups based on student needs, allowing for targeted instruction. The IB Biology programme encourages students to explore global scientific questions through an interdisciplinary lens.
In addition, the IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) course, also offered in Grades 11 and 12, covers topics such as ecology, chemistry, human geography, and politics. Taught by IB-trained Turkish and international teachers, this course includes fieldwork opportunities supported by the school’s extensive resources. Through this experience, students develop into responsible, solution-oriented individuals equipped to engage with today’s environmental challenges.
